Nieder-Weisel Memorial - German Dedication Event

In October 2010, the ceremonial plaque was unveiled and dedicated to the families that migrated from the village of Nieder-Weisel to Victoria, Australia in search of work and wealth generated by the Victorian gold rush. The dedication event, attended by over 20 Australians and many locals included a welcome dinner, Church Service and Dedication Ceremony, a walking tour of Nieder-Weisel, a night of Kegel (German Skittles) and many lunches and dinners.

Friday 1st October Welcome drinks and information at Johanniter Hotel, Nieder-Weisel for visitors and local officials. (Includes powerpoint presentation giving some idea of the kind of life our German ancestors experienced on the goldfields in Australia in the 1850s, plus images of Melbourne during 1850s and present day) followed by Dinner at Johanniter Hotel.

Saturday 2nd October

Walking tour of Nieder-Weisel. Included Dorfkirche & Commandery Churches, cemetery, early history and village life. Stroll the nightwatchman’s path, learn about the moat and watchtowers, the two big village fires, and much more.
Lunch
- Bavarian style lunch with Nieder Weisel Tennis Club

Evening Game of kegle (nine pin bowling) at Zur Glocke followed by Dinner at Zur Glocke

Sunday 3rd October Church service at Dorfkirche followed by dedication of memorial in church grounds.
